NIproxy Services for Net Integrator Servers     Services

Mail Proxy

Our Mail Proxy service lets you receive mail on your Net Integrator without using the standard SMTP port 25.

Why is Mail Proxying Useful?

In a perfect world, you would simply configure your mail service on your Net Integrator, enable the SMTP port 25 on your external network interface, register your domain and mail server in DNS, and your mail would come flowing in, with never a problem.

Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world, so getting your email delivered is not always that simple. And that's why NIproxy's Mail Proxy service exists.

Does your network provider block or restrict port 25?

Many cost-effective network providers, offering cable modem or xDSL access, have a "no servers" policy, and don't allow publicly available services (like mail or web) on their customer connections, either through their terms of service, or by explicitly blocking those ports.

Is your network connectivity less than perfect?

If your system is unavailable, due to network problems, power outages, or reconfigurations at your end, our Mail Proxy service will "queue up" your incoming mail until your server is reachable again.

Do you want to limit the network bandwidth used for incoming mail?

If you receive lots of incoming mail, and you want to make sure your network connection doesn't get overloaded with too many "inbound" connections at one time, our Mail Proxy service will use only a single incoming mail stream at a time, leaving more of your limited bandwidth available for other uses.

How Does Mail Proxying Work?

Mail Proxying works by using DNS to tell other mail servers to deliver your email to the NIproxy mail server, which in turn delivers your email to your Net Integrator.

This is accomplished by

  • Settings on the NIproxy mail server, telling it how to handle your mail, and where to deliver it.
  • Re-configuring your Net Integrator to listen for email on a non-standard port.
  • Adding DNS "Mail Exchanger" (MX) records to your DNS configuration directing your incoming email to the NIproxy mail server.
Complete, specific instructions are provided by NIproxy once you sign up, and we're always available to to help resolve any problems you may be having.

You Retain Control

One of the "peace of mind" benefits of this configuration mechanism is that you retain control. In the unlikely event that there is a problem with the service, or if you simply choose to do things differently, you can easily change to another preferred configuration, without having to wait for anyone else to handle your request.

Optional SpamAssassin(tm) Filtering

At your option, you can augment the NIproxy Mail Proxy service with our Spam Filtering service, augmenting the Spam control facilities of your Net Integrator with the power of the SpamAssassin(tm) mail filter. (SpamAssassin is a trademark of Deersoft, Inc.)
